Cheyenne Parker hit a short jumper with 5.9 seconds remaining, and the Chicago Sky capped a second-half surge to pin the first loss of the season on the Washington Mystics with an 88-86 victory Saturday night at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla.
In three-minute stretch that began in the final minute of the third quarter, the Sky produced 16 consecutive points to turn a six-point deficit into the game's first double-digit margin.
Parker and reserve Gabby Williams each finished with 16 points, with Williams adding nine rebounds. Allie Quigley added 15 points, Kahleah Copper provided 14 and Diamond DeShields had 10 for the Sky (3-1), who made 12 of 25 attempts from 3-point range.
Ariel Atkins led the Mystics (3-1) with 24 points, and Aerial Powers poured in 20. Myisha Hines-Allen tacked on 13 points and 12 boards, and Leilani Mitchell had 12 points.
Parker scored on a drive to the basket with 22.1 seconds remaining before Atkins tied the game with two free throws with 13.8 seconds to play. After Parker's winning basket, the Mystics never got off another shot, as Courtney Vandersloot was credited with a steal in the final second.
After the Mystics closed within 79-76 with three minutes left, Williams drained a 3-pointer. It was her fourth 3-pointer in five attempts from long range.
But the Mystics connected on their first eight free-throw attempts in the fourth quarter, going up 83-82 when Atkins made a pair at the 1:14 mark.
There were several second-half shifts of momentum. Washington built a 51-42 lead early in the third quarter, but 3-pointers from Williams and Quigley in the final minute of the frame allowed the Sky to pull even at 62-62 entering the fourth.
That turned into a 16-0 run when the Sky posted the first 10 points of the fourth quarter, doing so in 1 minute, 46 seconds. DeShields notched the first four points of the quarter.
The Mystics went 4:11 without a point bridging the two quarters.
Chicago reserves outscored Washington bench players 28-8.
The Mystics led 37-35 at halftime despite receiving only four points from their reserves. The Sky missed their final seven shots of the first half.
Parker had eight points as the Sky led 20-15 after one quarter.
