TARLAC CITY, Dec. 17 (PIA) -- Tarlac is boosting agri-tourism to ensure food security and promote new scenic spots in the province amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Governor Susan Yap said the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist and Provincial Tourism Office are working hand in hand for this endeavor to help communities become self-sustaining.
"We've launched this project to help barangays, especially those who undergo lockdown due to COVID-19, have food in their own community," she shared.
The provincial government provided the materials for the development of the vegetable gardens such as organic fertilizers, farming implements, seedling trays, seeds and African night crawlers. 2,000 square meters of land per barangay is evolved to vegetable flower gardens.
Yap said the condition to communities is to work together in growing their plants and vegetables.
"I asked the communities to not hire people outside their barangays because it should be a community effort of mothers and neighbors," the official furthered.
The community who will produce the most beautiful vegetable flower garden shall be given a prize of PhP300,000 in the Community Agri-Tourism Farm Sustainability Contest.
To date, about 30 barangays have joined and developed their idle lands to vegetable gardens. (CLJD/GLSB-PIA 3)
